Today would have been Mona’s 55th birthday. It’s so indicative of who she was that the first photo I found of her blowing out candles on a cake wasn’t from her own birthday, but at a special birthday party she arranged for her father, Neal, shortly before he died October 13, 2006.
Knowing he wouldn’t be alive for his own 76th birthday October 28, Mona had the idea of an early birthday and combined it with the birthdays of relatives who could attend and whose parties her Dad would not live to see. The combined ages of those attending, 300, tops the cake.
She was a doting daughter, and after her father’s death, how she and her Mom would fuss at one another – most lovingly, of course – about whether Mona would or would not accompany her Mom to doctor’s visits and other healthcare appointments. They were arguments Mona always won. She just couldn’t help herself from being there when the health of someone she loved was concerned.
For all our birthdays you made brighter my love, Happy Birthday to you.
